Seminar-Workshop on Deaf Psychology for Social Workers and Allied Discipline

Course Description:

The course focuses on the psychological underpinnings of the uniqueness of being Deaf and the nature of abuse and abusive relationships. It is designed with the end in view that efforts that are directed towards protection, prevention, providing interventions and treatment may become Deaf-responsive and Deaf-affirmative. This course is intended for social workers and other service providers in related fields who work with or who are preparing to serve d/Deaf clients.

Objectives:

At the end of the training, the participants will:

  • Explain and shift to perspectives that are empowering to Deaf people;
  • Describe the uniqueness of Deaf people and Deaf life based on frameworks that integrate psychology and Deaf Studies;
  • Identify appropriate protective and preventive measures against d/Deaf abuse;
  • Cite evidence-based intervention and treatment strategies for d/Deaf survivors of abuse.
  • Explain some foundational concepts in sign linguistics that service providers of d/Deaf people should know;
  • Demonstrate FSL signs that can be useful in an encounter with a d/Deaf abuse survivor.
