Treating Victims of Child Sexual Abuse

Course Description:

This three-day session on treatment of the child sexual abuse victim or survivor is based on effects on child development, person- in -environment elements, case management issues, and ideas for dealing with the most common issues these children and youth experience through counseling. Methodologies include interactive lectures, guest speakers, workshops, small group activities, role playing, video showing, and sharing of materials and experiences. This session is open only to professionals who focus on victims and are providing mental health counseling.

Objectives:

To increase children’s access to abuse-focused counseling by:

  • Equipping professionals with skills, materials and resources respond to the needs of sexually abused children
  • Understanding the dynamics, psychological impact and behavioral manifestation of sexual abuse
  • Identifying counseling issues among sexually abused children toward the development and implementation of abuse-focused intervention plans
